Knack Digital Moviemaking: Tools & Techniques to Make Movies like a Pro (Knack: Make It easy) ReviewWhile it may not be perfect for everyone, this is a very competently constructed introductory guide to digital video. As it says inside the front cover, it's aimed toward visual learners and it's designed to be easily digested in short pointed snippets of information.
Personally, I loved many of the images in this book that show comparative images, for instance of the difference between using a specific filter and not using it. It's also separated out into "tabbed" sections (the tabs being colored sectino titles at the right edge of each page making it very easy to flip through the sections): History, Genre, Story, Preparation, Cameras, Equipment, Lighting, Sound, Acting, Shooting, Advanced Shooting, Editing, Editing II, Editing Techniques, Post-Production, Effects, Animation / Graphics, Finishing, Guerilla Filmmaking, Resources.
Most pages consist of text on the top of the page & 1-2 images per page with 3-4 bullet points of information below those.
This book is seemingly jam-packed with basic information. But, since it *is* jam-packed and the information is largely basic and boiled down, it certainly feels like a lot more could have been said on a number of topics (for instance, I'd have liked to know more about different types of lenses, filters and lighting). Since it's aimed at beginners, I can easily forgive the the lack of depth due to the breadth of information. If someone needs to delve deeper into information on a specific topic, they'd be well-advised to look for a book on that specific topic. This is a broad overview, and not necessarily an in-depth analysis.
Again, the book is very easy to navigate. Simply by flipping through and seeing the tabs and photos on the pages, it's pretty simple to get to the right section of the book and the information you're looking for.
If you're already in the industry and know your craft, I'm dubious you'd get much out of this book. But if you're looking for a first book to survey the landscape and get your bearings, this seems a very adequate tome to thumb through and very quickly learn some things.
Also, it's more informational than instructional in that it provides insights, but generally not any specific step-by-step instructions on any given topic. so, for instance it will visually show you the difference between overexposure and underexposure, but not necessarily give you specific steps on how to adjust your shutter speed, aperture or ISO settings. It will show you what a tripod looks like or a few different types of lenses / filters, but not how to attach them to your camera. It will tell you the names of some popular video and audio editing programs, but does not provide instructions on how to use them. It will tell you the difference between MiniDV tapes, MiniDVDs, HDD camcorders and flash memory, but it won't recommend one over the others. It just gives you the information and allows you to exercise your own judgment and creativity. It gives you the tools and the vocabulary, but it's up to you to put it into practice. This may work well for some but not for others.
Personally, I feel relatively competent with the basic tools, so getting some of the theory, techniques and vocabulary behind it seems sensible enough to me. I don't necessarily need step-by-step instructions or to be led by the nose. Thus, this meets my needs and strikes a good balance.
I'm quite pleased.Knack Digital Moviemaking: Tools & Techniques to Make Movies like a Pro (Knack: Make It easy) Overview
